On a busy test range, the telemetry signal from an airborne test article arrives at multiple ground stations, each with its own antenna system and receive chain. At any given moment, one station may have excellent signal quality while another experiences multipath interference. The challenge for the range team is determining which station's data stream to trust — in real-time, without interrupting the recording or the real-time display. This is the problem that best source selection solves, and the Best Data Engine (BDE) from Parraid is one of the most capable solutions available for mission-critical telemetry programs.
Best source selection monitors multiple incoming telemetry streams, each from a different receive station or antenna and selects the highest-quality source for downstream processing and recording. The selection is made continuously, parameter by parameter or frame by frame, based on signal quality metrics such as bit error rate, signal-to-noise ratio, or lock status. The output is a single composite stream that draws from whichever input source is performing best at each moment — from the perspective of downstream systems, it appears as a single, seamless data stream with the best possible quality throughout the flight.
The Best Data Engine (BDE) implements best source selection in a hardware-accelerated architecture that delivers true real-time performance without compromising the timing accuracy required for flight safety monitoring and post-flight analysis. The BDE monitors multiple input streams simultaneously, evaluating signal quality at the bit level and making source selection decisions faster than any operator could manually intervene. It supports both encrypted and unencrypted telemetry streams — its ability to perform best source selection on encrypted streams without requiring decryption is a unique and critical capability for classified programs.
The BDE's composite output stream feeds downstream systems including the IMUX G2e recorder for long-term storage and the OMEGA NExT processing environment “Clarity” for real-time display. The composite stream maintains full time correlation with the original source streams, ensuring post-flight analysis can reconstruct exactly which source was selected at every point in the flight.
For programs that prefer to perform best source selection during post-processing, the BSR-100 Best Source Reproducer provides the same source selection intelligence applied to recorded data. The BSR-100 accepts up to 32 independent PCM streams and generates a single composite output, enabling re-run of the selection process with different algorithms or quality thresholds without requiring another flight.
The practical value is most apparent during flight safety critical test events. When a test vehicle is pushing the boundaries of its flight envelope, the test conductor needs complete confidence that the telemetry data feeding the limit monitors is as good as it can possibly be. Parraid's BDE gives programs the confidence that their real-time data stream is always drawing from the best available source.
